With improvements on the route and (old) new modes F1 2021 secures the pole position in the racing game.
Formula 1 is back at Electronic Arts. Older Zockers may remember that the publisher giant produced their own F1 games at the beginning of the millennium. Yes yes, it's long. Since 2009, the license was at Codemasters and the British studio is now a daughter of EA. And so F1 2021 is the first Formula 1 game with EA-Sports-Intro for almost 20 years - and the best of its kind.
Codemasters finally tells something
A little time travel: Codemasters DTM Race Driver published 2003. The racing game is considered an absolute classic and, among other things, because it is one of the few genre representatives that offer a convincing story mode. Despite a lot of praise, this narrative aspect was always irrelevant in subsequent titles. In part 3 of the series he was already completely eliminated, in the grid games there are also no stories (but come with Grid Legends again) and not in the DIRT series. Well, in Dirt 5 from the past year, an action is told on the basis of podcasts, but a added value is certainly not. All the more beautiful that F1 2021 is the first Codemasters racing game after a long time, which again offers a full-fledged story mode.

In F1 2019 you had already experimented a little. In the case, the storytelling with proper intermediate sequences was limited but merely on the first hour of the career. The current part separates story and career mode from each other. In "Braiking Point", she slips into the skin of the British junior driver Aiden Jackson, which in the year 2020 is fresh into Formula 1, and experiences the flowering phase of his career with all its heights and depths. The Playerish Depth as in "My Team" about there is not here. Her ride simply a race after another, some of them do not even complete, and does not play any seasons. Instead, there are always time jumps.
The story is clearly in the foreground in "Braking Point" and is a typical "from Zero to hero" number without great surprises, but with some clichés. So do not expect a great deal of narrative! However, the intermediate sequences look properly, even though the faces and their animations have long not reached the level of a The Last of US: Part 2, and somehow does the whole of the defects mentioned. We are just looking forward to having such an experience in a racing game that is not an arcade racer. And the races make fun.
A dream of Ki
F1 2021 is based in playerwise logical wise on the foundation of the fantastic predecessors and even puts a shovel on it. This means you will not only get a racing game with great physics, which can be adapted to beginners thanks to various driving aids, but also an even better Ki than in the past few years. The virtual Hamilton, Vettels and Co are no longer so aggressive, even make room if they realize that they can not prevent it without remoplers, but are at the same time on a higher level of difficulty (can be returned to single steps of 0 Setting up to 110) very stubborn and deliver grabbing position combat.
The fact that the computer drivers tend less to car scooter moments is good, because Codemasters has revised the damage model belonging. If you put this on "realistic", the easiest touches can cause severe damage. This not only looks chic when various items fly through the area, but of course also has a strong influence on the performance of your bolides. Who wants to have some more orienting, weakens the simulation at the point.
Hardly any other racing game is managed to prepare us so exciting duels as F1 can, only right this year.
Finally again Koop career
In addition to "Braking Point" F1 2021 offers another new mode, which is not even so new, but a returnee: for the first time after a long time there is a multiplayer career again. Here you either drive together with a teammate in the same team and tries to win cooperative to win the Constructorsian championship, or you are standing for different racing stables and thus against each other. Class that this mode is celebrating its comeback and complement the rest of the field of multiplayer modes such as the online leagues, single races, weekly events and even LAN and split screen mode.
As if that would not be enough for a game, there is of course the two variants of the singleplayer career again in F1 2021: there would be a "my team", where you are your own boss and not only with deserved resource points yours Duke further developed, but also installed facilities, set up a second driver and take care of sponsor agreements. On the other hand, however, you can also compete quite simply as a contract driver for a team to change your employer in the course of your career and even start in Formula 2 as desired. In addition, it is still possible to set up in time-separation of shipment or to drive individual Grands Prix or self-created championships. F1 2021 offers as many options in single and multiplayers like no other racing game.
The scope is very big in itself, but a small shortcoming is there: three routes are still missing. This concerns Imola, Portimao and Jeddah. You will not be submitted with free updates. Since this is the new routes of the current F1 season, it could be attributable to the current lack of play on the working conditions in the pandemic. Nevertheless, it is a pity that you have to do without those courses in your virtual seasons.
Next gene goes differently, but chic is it
The optical upgrade compared to its predecessor is rather low - and although F1 2021 is the first part of the series that appeared for the PS5 and Xbox Series X / S. But the old console generation has also served Codemasters, which is why they have not been able to do so. After all: On the new platforms and in the PC version we tested, there are rayTracing reflections on the cars. They look chic, only if you drive in the cockpit perspective, you sometimes do not get so much of it. But even without raytracing F1 2021 makes a good figure thanks to the original rebuilt routes, crisp asphalt textures and the great day / night change as well as weather system.
Of course, optically even more possible would be thanks to the new consoles, but for the old ones to be operated, F1 2021 really looks like a cheese.
The rest of the fantastic formula 1 atmosphere contributes the authentic engine sounds and the intermediate sequences, such as the moderated introductions before each race and the winning rations. Only the German setting is left to be desired. Sure, from Heiko Water and his colleague, no more professional actors become more who do not present their sentences so that they are listening directly to them. But from the speakers in Story mode you could have expected more. Unfortunately, you do not have the option to change the language. Only the commentators and boxing radio are available in several variants.
Conclusion
Codemasters made it again. With the story mode and the multiplayer career, there are great innovations in F1 2021, which make the overall package even more voluminous. "Braking Point" does not like the wisdom's last conclusion, which concerns such game variants in racing, but for a few hours the story of Aiden Jackson is quite fun. The highlight remains the "My Team" mode with all its depth. On the route itself, F1 2021 shines with a new damage model and better Ki. In hardly any other genre representative, the races are as exciting and entertaining as here. Therefore, we attach the title even to the heart, if you do not have anything with Formula 1 at the hat, but just await good racing games. F1 2021 is finally a damn good.
